International Students

Pembroke School has a long and proud tradition of enrolling international students. For over 60 years students from Asia, Europe, America (North and South) and Africa have chosen to make Pembroke School and Adelaide their second home. Some have completed their entire secondary schooling at Pembroke while others have completed only their senior years here. For many international families the second generation of students have been and are being educated at Pembroke and we look forward to receiving the third generation of some international families. Typically each year Pembroke School enrols approximately 40 international students.

Our international student body is also inclusive of a strong expatriate community, with approximately 10 expatriate students enrolled each year. Many of these students have lived with their families in various locations around the world and often for much of their life prior to starting at Pembroke as boarders.

Pembroke School has appointed a Co-ordinator of International Students, who oversees the academic and social welfare of international students, liaises closely with parents to achieve the best outcomes for their children whilst at Pembroke.

The School maintains strong communication links with the parents of international students, Old Scholars and their parents. Parents are welcome to visit the School and meet with teachers at any time, should they be in Adelaide. The Principal and senior staff regularly travel to Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Germany to meet with current and prospective parents and to have joint celebrations with Old Scholars and their families.

International students, not living with their parents, board at the School while studying. The boarding experience leads to life-long friendships with fellow students from very diverse backgrounds, both in regional and rural Australia and other countries. This mixing of cultures and life experiences provides all with opportunities for meaningful interactions.

International students who have graduated from Pembroke School have flourished in their chosen fields: often in Law, Medicine, Engineering, Commerce, Computing and the Creative Arts. As a School we enjoy hearing news of young Old Scholars who are making a positive contribution in their countries following a sound education at Pembroke and then often at local universities.

Pembroke's international connection is at the heart of the School's philosophy to develop and nurture students' understanding of the world and their important place in it. In addition to offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) and Primary Years Programme (PYP), our international connections are further enhanced by staff exchanges, student exchanges (with schools in Canada, South Africa and China) and student trips (for instance we have organised study tours in recent years to Morocco, Portugal, France, China, Germany, Spain and Samoa) and performance trips of our various bands, orchestras and choirs to many parts of the world. We also have a sister school relationship with a leading middle school in Xi'an, China. To strengthen our international connections, Pembroke students are also able to study Chinese, French, German, Indonesian and Spanish.
