Admission of International Students

CRICOS Provider Number 00367B

Pembroke School's international student cohort comprises students whose home, permanent residence, is located outside of Australia. This group includes expatriates, students who hold dual citizenship/residency, students on various temporary or business visas (do not hold Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency) and students holding Student Visa 571 who are classified as Full Fee Paying Overseas Students (FFPOS).

In the case of FFPOS the admissions process is as below. For all other international students the admissions process is as for local Australian Citizens or Residents. It is an expectation of the School that all international students reside in the School Boarding House unless living with at least one parent.

The stages of admission are as follows:

2. Introduction

International Students are broadly regarded as students for whom their home (principal place of family residence) is a country other than Australia. This student group includes expatriate Australians, permanent Residents of Australia, students who have a Temporary Residency Visa and students studying in Australia on a Student Visa Sub-class 571 [known as Full Fee Paying Overseas Students (FFPOS) for the purpose of School Policy and administration].

All international students are subject to points 3 – 6

3. Entry Requirements to Pembroke School

Pembroke School will consider all applications for admission to Pembroke School from international students, including those wishing to apply for a Student Visa (571) subject to the following:

  • The student applicant must meet minimum educational requirements (see International Student Entry Requirement Policy) for entry to any given year level.
  • Pembroke School does not offer direct entry into mid-Year 11 or Year 12 for international students, except in the case of an International Student transferring from another Australian School. There may also be exceptions in the case of students who are studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma at an international school using English as the language of instruction. Such exceptions will be conditional upon the student’s subject selection and prior studies meeting Pembroke School offerings and achievement expectations.

4. English Language Requirements and AEAS Testing

If English is not the applicant’s first language, or if the applicant is studying in a school in which English is not the only language of instruction (excepting the study of a foreign language), then the applicant will be required to sit the Australian Education Assessment Services (AEAS) test to determine any need to attend an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) on arrival in Australia. The AEAS test is administered in cities throughout Asia, Australia, North America, Germany and the UK. Testing in other countries can be arranged on request. (Please see International Student Entry Requirement Policy for further details regarding English Language requirements)

If the AEAS test or other tests recognised by the School recommends that the applicant study ELICOS, Pembroke School will provide parents with details of schools able to offer this service.

The AEAS test must be completed before an offer of admission is made, unless the applicant can demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English through other mutually negotiated methods.

Students studying outside of Australia, at non-Australian international schools are also required to sit for the AEAS test to assist in determining correct year level placements. These students may also be required to sit for Pembroke School Exams and/or participate in Pembroke onsite class based assessments (visiting days).

5. Accommodation

International Students not living with parents are required to board at Pembroke School. Fully supervised boarding facilities (meals and accommodation) are available for students from Year 7 onwards.

The Boarding house is closed for the School holidays. If not returning home or holidaying in Australia with parents then International boarders will need to have a homestay arrangement, approved by the School. The School will assist students to find a suitable homestay family.

6. Application Process and Requirements

Application
All applicants are required to complete and lodge an Application for Admission Form and pay an Application Fee. Applicants are required to submit the following documents with their application:

  • photocopy of passport
  • most recent school report
  • results of any public examinations
  • a school testimonial
  • copies of any educational reports or assessments, for example educational testing or assessment by an accredited educational psychologist, speech pathologist or occupational therapist
  • details of any special requirements such as for health and personal care, and
  • details of any past or current educational or health agency support.

All applicants will be added to the waitlist for the requested year level and year and will be subject to the School’s Admissions Policy and waitlist criteria, as detailed in the Admissions Policy.

Lodging an application is not a guarantee that an offer for a place of admission will be made.

Testing
All international student applicants will be required to have AEAS testing as detailed in the International Student Entry Requirements Policy.

In some circumstances students may also be required to sit for Pembroke administered tests to clarify ability in subjects.

Formal Offers of Admission
Formal Offers of Admission will begin to be made from 1 March two years prior to entry and will continue to be made until all vacancies are filled. Acceptance of an offer of admission requires international applicants to complete and sign the following documents:

  • Acceptance of Offer of Admission Contract or Acceptance of Offer of Admission (FFPOS) Contract in the case of FFPOS.
  • Personal Details for Confidential School Files Form.

Payment of Fees
All students are required to pay an Admissions Fee and Tuition Bond at the time of accepting an Offer of Admission.

Students who hold a Student Visa (Sub-class 571) are required to pay one semester’s tuition (where this does not exceed 50% of the total course cost) and boarding fees in advance by 30 October of the year preceding entry (an alternative date will be determined for late or mid-year applicants). Fees will be invoiced according to the Fee Schedule for FFPOS Students. Please note that the first fee payment cannot be made prior to the Acceptance of Offer of Admission Contract being signed and returned to the School.

Other international students will generally be invoiced according to the local student Fee Schedule, dependent upon citizenship, permanent residency status, or type of visa.

Details of Tuition and Non-Tuition Fees, Fee Policy and the FFPOS Refund Policy are available in all Information Packages and will again be provided with each Offer for Admission.

To request an Information Package complete and submit Request Information Pack.

Health Cover
All Students studying in Australia on a Student Visa Subclass 571 are required to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), as a condition of their Visa. Details of OSHC providers and their products can be found at www.studyinaustralia.gov.au/global/live-in-australia/insurance.

FFPOS are required to make payment in advance for OSHC for the full duration of their Course of Study.

Pembroke School Students will be invoiced for OSHC costs for the full duration of their Course of Study on their first fee statement. Pembroke School will enrol the student in their OSHC provider of choice and on-pay these fees to the student’s insurance provider prior to their arrival in Australia.

In the absence of a student nominating an insurer the School will arrange insurance with Allianz OSHC. Please note that in using Allianz as a default insurer does not mean that the School recommends Allianz products as being the best available. It remains the responsibility of the parent to research and select an insurer and products that best meet the needs of their child.

Pembroke School is required to ensure that the student is covered by OSHC prior to issuing the Confirmation of Enrolment Form and Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) letter.

Visa
In the case of FFPOS, following completion of the above mentioned steps, including payment of the first fee instalment, the School will issue the Applicant with a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) letter which will enable the applicant to apply for an Australian Student Visa Subclass 571.
