David came to the bear book project with no previous experience in book illustration, but a lifetime of drawing, painting and design. He has had very little formal art or design training, but has enjoyed drawing since the age of two and paints mostly in watercolour and pastel. He has sold many of his works, including a successful solo exhibition in 1999. His professional career was in industrial design, following a childhood passion for car design.
Having enjoyed two years of retirement, David was re-energised when his daughter Sally, an Old Scholar (93), asked if he would like to illustrate a book she had been asked to write based on the Pembroke Bear Making Programme project.
Then followed several months of (very enjoyable) hard work and collaboration with Sally, Lisa McKeough, as project coordinator, and publisher/book designer Emma Borghesi.
David is delighted to have been part of such a creative team, and would like to thank Luke, Lisa and the Bear committee for making it all possible.
