Held during National Reconciliation Week, the Pembroke Indigenous Sport Round is always a significant time for our School community.

8 May 2025

It is a time for us to recognise our shared histories and focus on how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. We are tremendously grateful to Kaurna Ambassadors Uncle Michael O’Brien and Uncle Robert Taylor who will lead Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremonies across the weekend, and to our Kaurna Language students who will perform the Acknowledgement of Country. The Yunupingu Cup games are always vibrant, competitive and memorable! We invite you to join us in supporting our teams in this important round of sport.

History:
Pembroke's long-standing support of Indigenous students is encapsulated by the Yunupingu Cup, which certain teams compete for during Indigenous Round sports. Initiated by old scholar Michael Yunupingu (2015), the Yunupingu Cup represents identity, strength and unity - all embodied by the special Indigenous Round sport uniforms. The design was created by old scholars Jenice Gordon (2017) and Brenz Saunders (2015). Yunupingu Cup matches are preceded by a Kaurna Acknowledgement or a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Kaurna Elders.
