Co-curricular Arts

Pembroke School supports a large practical performance program consisting of orchestras, bands, choirs, chamber and contemporary ensembles. Music students enjoy an active and stimulating annual program of concerts.

The School has a well-established choral tradition. In the Junior School, students may participate in the Songbirds Choir (boys and girls in Years 2 - 3), Cantabile Choir (girls in Years 4 - 6) and the Boys' Choir (boys in Years 4 - 6). In the Middle School, both boys and girls participate in the Pembroke Choir. The Pembroke Chamber Singers and the Jazz Choir are auditioned groups and have toured nationally and internationally and compete in national and local competitions. From time to time, all choirs combine to perform selected repertoire at School Concerts and special events.

The Pembroke Concert Band is an ensemble of approximately forty wind, brass and percussion instruments. From within this group two Jazz Big Bands are formed. These bands attend a variety of festivals and competitions as well as perform with an artist in residence at the Jazz Cabaret each year.

Pembroke School has an extensive orchestral program. The Pembroke Symphony Orchestra is a large ensemble, which performs works from the standard orchestral repertoire. The Pembroke String Orchestra is an advanced ensemble, performing works from the vast mainstream String Orchestra repertoire. The Pembroke Middle School Orchestra and the Junior School String Orchestra also have extensive rehearsal and performance programs. At various times, one or more of these groups will rehearse and perform with professional chamber musicians.

Chamber music programs provide additional opportunities for small group performances. These events include the Annual Showcase Concert, Jazz Cabaret, Chamber Music Soirées with invited guests and workshops, Recital Nights and 'Lessons and Carols' at the end of the School year.

The Rock School provides an opportunity for students to experience song writing, playing, rehearsing and performing together in rock bands. Middle School students (Years 7 - 10) participate in weekly rehearsals and perform, in Terms 2 and 4, in events that aim to create the exciting atmosphere of a real rock concert for student performers and audience. Senior School bands perform in Term 4 with a more varied range of acts including solo, duo and group acts. This program is run in conjunction with the Contemporary Music classroom program.

Students in Years 7-12 passionate about Visual Art are also offered an extensive range of co-curricular activities including Soft Sculpture, Ceramics (hand building and wheel throwing), Jewellery Making, Painting and Drawing and Life Drawing.

A co-curricular Film Club also offers students the opportunity to develop their film making skills and to make their own documentaries, music videos and short narrative films. Opportunities to submit these films in local, national and international competitions is also provided.

Arts Students in Years 9 and 10 are also given the opportunity to participate in the Biennial Middle School Musical, as singers, dancers, actors, musicians, technicians and designers. Students who undertake this opportunity engage in practical workshops and rehearsals, which culminate in a week-long season of performances in Term 3.
