Lilli Bowen (2017) is currently studying Midwifery at the University of South Australia, with plans to graduate at the end of 2025. Deeply passionate about women’s health, Lilli is driven by the privilege of supporting families through some of life’s most transformative moments. Inspired by her time at Pembroke, particularly Outdoor Education and the encouragement to follow her own path, Lilli brings warmth, resilience, and compassion to everything she does, whether it's in the delivery room or exploring the SA coastline on weekends.
What is your favourite memory of your time at Pembroke?
My favourite memories of my time at Pembroke definitely revolve around Outdoor Education! I absolutely loved Outdoor Ed, and I look back on all the amazing experiences I was able to have so fondly. I think at the time we all took it for granted – We were so lucky to be able to do things that many people don’t get to do in their lifetime!
Who was your favourite teacher at Pembroke and why?
I had so many wonderful teachers during my time at Pembroke, it’s hard to choose just one! Mr Quinn and Mr Lodge were definitely a couple of my favourites – I was terrible at Geography, but Mr Quinn always took the time to help and make me laugh. Mr Lodge was a wonderful teacher, too. He always went the extra mile for us and managed to put up with a group of teenagers on week-long camping trips (I’m still not sure how).
How did your time at Pembroke shape the path you are on today?
My time at Pembroke taught me to be confident, compassionate and resilient. The school created an environment where I felt supported to challenge myself and explore what I was passionate about, rather than follow what others were doing. After I completed my Bachelor of Arts, I decided to teach myself biology and apply for midwifery – something I wouldn’t have done if it wasn’t for the values that were instilled in me at Pembroke.
What is your biggest University highlight, and what key skills do you believe have been the most beneficial for you in degree?
My biggest highlight at university was definitely attending my first birth and delivering my first baby! I was in awe and (embarrassingly) cried tears of joy - I’ll never forget those firsts. Seeing a baby being born and then delivering one yourself is wild, I still can’t wrap my head around it!
Strong communication, emotional resilience and adaptability have been the most beneficial skills during my degree. In midwifery, you’re supporting women and families through incredibly vulnerable and life-changing moments, so being able to communicate clearly and compassionately is essential. Emotional resilience has helped me to stay grounded during the vast highs and lows, and adaptability is key – no day is ever the same! These skills have grown through practice, reflection and learning from the teachers I’ve had and the midwives I’ve worked alongside.
What’s the best piece of professional advice you’ve received, and who gave it to you?
When I was in my first year of midwifery, one of my tutors told me: “You don’t need to know everything, you just need to be willing to learn”. This really stuck with me, and I have always strived to maintain an open mind and willingness to learn - everything clicks eventually!
What inspires you?
I think since starting Midwifery, I’ve been inspired by people who can show kindness and strength in the face of immense challenges. I see so many women and families display incredible resilience, and that really motivates me to be my best. Additionally, the healthcare workers who strongly advocate for women, provide empathy and compassion, and provide peace in the panic inspire me every day.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
“Trust the process and stop putting so much pressure on having everything figured out. There’s no need to jump into anything, you’ve got plenty of time. You can do anything you want if you work hard, stop procrastinating(!!) and put yourself out there.”
What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy week?
After a busy week I love to just shut my brain off and do things that will help me recharge. Whether that be walking my dog, catching up with friends, spending time with my partner or just binging a TV show!
What are your 4 favourite movies?
It’s hard to pick just four, but Jurassic Park, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Step Brothers (I like a bit of everything!)
If you could have coffee or dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be?
Would you judge me if I said Harry Styles?
